Motivation Monday with Niamh Glynn
Niamh Glynn shares the importance of goal setting.
We were so lucky to get the opportunity to speak to the extremely talented Niamh Glynn from the Linda Martyn School of Irish Dancing. We spoke all things motivation, goals, dreams and struggles during what is an extremely tough year for dancers across the globe.
Full Name: Niamh Glynn
Who or what keeps you motivated?
My teacher, Linda is a great motivator and hugely encouraging to me to not lose focus just because we are not competing currently. By providing on-line dancing classes and weekly challenges, I have been continuously engaged in activities which have kept me driven.
What have you found hardest about being in quarantine and what have you been doing to keep yourself going?
I was disappointed with the cancellation of the 2020 World Championships as I was training very hard and feeling excited about it. I also found it hard not being able to go to the studio to practice, meet my friends and compete at any feiseanna.
I have been setting myself weekly goals to perfect small things in my dances and doing online fitness classes to keep my fitness levels up, which has helped me greatly.
What are your goals for the future and what are you doing to work at them?
My goal for the future is to win a world globe and I have been working very hard to achieve this. I am keeping my fitness levels up and continuing to practice hard every day to perfect my dances.
What advice do you have for other dancers who have their sights set on a goal?
Setting specific and clear goals is important. Don’t make them too big or you could end up feeling disappointed with yourself. It is good to have short-term and long-term goals, be proud of yourself when you achieve a short-term goal and keep working towards the long-term goals and don’t let disappointments set you back.
